About RSD Calculator

RSD Calculator is an independent, free statistics toolkit. We build calculators that load fast, respect your privacy, and explain the math instead of hiding it behind a button.

Our Story

RSD Calculator started with a frustrated lab notebook. A graduate student needed to validate relative standard deviation across hundreds of titration runs and every web calculator they tried was either ad-stuffed, broken on mobile, or hid the working entirely. Spreadsheets were fine, but slow to set up; pocket calculators didn't show the steps; reference textbooks gave the formula but not the answer.

We sat down one weekend and built the simplest possible RSD calculator: paste numbers, press Calculate, see every intermediate step. That weekend prototype became the seed of this project. Today RSD Calculator has grown into a focused statistics toolkit covering the calculations students, lab analysts, and quality engineers actually need built around three rules we set on day one: be fast, show the working, and never gate features behind a sign-up.

The project is independently funded and not backed by venture capital, so the only metric we optimise for is whether the tool actually solved your problem. If something is missing, slow, or wrong, the fastest way to fix it is to write to us at contact@rsdcalculator.com.

Who We Are

We are a small, distributed team of engineers, statisticians, and former lab scientists. Between us we have spent years in analytical chemistry quality control, biotech R&D, academic research, and software engineering which means the tools we build are shaped by the workflows we wish we'd had when we were the ones running the experiments.

We are not a marketing-led company. There is no growth team, no upsell flow, and no dark patterns. The site has no tracking on the values you type every calculation runs entirely in your browser. We do not store your data, sell it, or use it to train anything. The source of truth for any number on the page is the formula directly above it.

What We Do

We build free, no-friction statistics calculators with three things every result page should have but rarely does:

  • Step-by-step working. Every answer is followed by the formula it came from and the intermediate numbers used to get there. You can copy the working straight into a lab notebook, a homework set, or a method validation report.
  • Multiple input modes. Paste a raw data set, enter a known mean and standard deviation, or for grouped data provide class midpoints with frequencies. The calculator picks the right denominator (sample n − 1 vs. population n) based on what you select.
  • Zero friction. No accounts, no paywalls, no ads on result pages, and no cookies tracking the values you enter. Open the page, calculate, leave or bookmark it and come back tomorrow. Everything is a static page that loads in under a second.

Our toolkit currently covers relative standard deviation, standard deviation, variance, mean, the coefficient of variation, standard error, and a growing list of dispersion and position metrics. We also publish short, practical articles on the blog covering the kind of questions that actually come up in the lab when to use sample vs. population formulas, how RSD differs from CV in practice, and how to read a quality-control chart without getting lost in the jargon. For deeper background, the NIST/SEMATECH e-Handbook of Statistical Methods and the Wikipedia Coefficient of variation article are the references we keep coming back to.

Have a calculation we don't cover yet, spotted a bug, or want to translate RSD Calculator into your language? Tell us at contact@rsdcalculator.com. Feature requests from working scientists go straight to the top of the list.
